Knoxville Sistas of Steel empowers Black women through firearms training
The Knoxville-based Sistas of Steel provides specialized firearms training to Black women, fostering self-reliance and community within local gun ranges.
Bridging the representation gap
Founding members of the Sistas of Steel identified a significant lack of representation within the traditional firearms community. While visiting various gun ranges in Knoxville, participants noted they were often the only Black women present in these environments.
This isolation prompted the creation of a dedicated space where Black women can learn marksmanship, firearm safety, and self-defence techniques. The initiative aims to dismantle barriers to entry that many women of colour face when engaging with shooting sports.
Focus on skill and self-reliance
The training provided by the group goes beyond basic mechanics. It focuses on building a foundation of self-reliance and confidence through disciplined practice. The curriculum typically includes:
- Safe handling and storage of firearms
- Precision shooting techniques
- Situational awareness and personal protection
- Community-based mentorship
By mastering these skills, members gain more than just technical proficiency; they develop a sense of agency and preparedness. The program serves as both an educational platform and a social network for women seeking to navigate these spaces more comfortably.
Building a supportive community
The Sistas of Steel operates on the principle that community support is essential for long-term engagement in firearms training. Traditional shooting environments can often feel intimidating or unwelcoming to minority groups, creating a sense of exclusion.
Through regular training sessions and group outings, the organization creates a consistent presence for Black women in the Knoxville shooting community. This collective approach helps normalize the presence of women of colour at local ranges and encourages broader participation in firearm ownership and safety education.
