A 14-year-old from Moncton is recovering after becoming the first patient in Canada to benefit from a new 3D imaging technology during spinal surgery at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax. Molly Johnston underwent the procedure as part of her treatment for scoliosis.
Johnston is currently recovering well following the surgery. The IWK Health Centre recently acquired the advanced imaging machine, allowing surgeons to create more detailed and precise 3D models of a patient's anatomy before and during procedures. This improved visualization can lead to more accurate surgical planning and potentially better outcomes.
Scoliosis is a condition that causes an abnormal curvature of the spine. It affects a significant number of Canadians, and treatment options can range from bracing to surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. The enhanced imaging technology offers a significant advancement in surgical precision for patients like Johnston who require corrective spinal procedures.
The IWK Health Centre is a leading provider of specialized healthcare services for children and young adults in Atlantic Canada. The adoption of this new technology underscores the centre’s commitment to providing cutting-edge medical care and improving the lives of its patients.
